COMMUNITY CENTER DESIGN

This project was developed by Sruti Kana Saha as a student from Amity University Kolkata and was submited to the WAS awards 2017 under the Facilities category.

COMMUNITY CENTER DESIGN

OUR SECOND DESIGN PROJECT THIS YEAR (3RD YEAR, 5TH SEM) WAS A COMMUNITY CENTER DESIGN IN A PLOT LOCATED IN NEWTOWN, KOLKATA, WESTBENGAL, INDIA.

THE PLOT SIZE IS 80M BY 100M.

ROAD ALONG THE SOUTHERN SIDE, AS SHOWN IN THE PLANS.

THE MOST IMPORTANYT ELEMENT IN MY DESIGN THAT I TRIED TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT IS THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE BUILDING WITH THE NATURE.

THE BUILDING WAS THEREFORE PLACED IN SUCH A WAY TO ENSURE THAT, ALSO THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS.

AS IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD, THE SUN STAYS IN THE SOUTH FOR MAXIMUM TIME. SUN RISES IN THE EAST AND SETS IN THE WEST. DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON, IT ALSO GETS QUITE HOT IN THE WESTERN SIDE.

ALSO SINCE ITS A COMMUNITY CENTER, I WANTED THE BUILDING TO STAND OUT, AS PEOPLE TRAVEL ALONG THE ROAD, THEREFORE, PLACED THE MAIN BLOCK ALONG THE ROAD.

THE STAGGERED FACADES IS TO CREATE A REFLECTIVE RHYTHM OF LIGHT, AND ALSO TO REDUCE DIRECT CONTECT OF BUILDING TO THE SOUTHERN SUN, AS THE FRONT FACADE IS SOUTH FACING.

IN OTHER PARTS, IVE TRIED TO REDUCE SUNS HEAT TO REACH THE ROOMS BY ADDING BALCONY OR TERRACE TO THE SOUTHERN SIDE. ALSO THE STAIRCASE IS AN IMPORTATNT PART OF THE BUILDING. IVE PLACED ALL OF THEM IN THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING. AND ALL OF THEM ARE TO THE WEST, AS THE WEST ALSO GETS CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF HEAT DURING AFTERNOON.

ALTOGETHER, I TRIED TO ENSURE THAT THE OUTDOOR GATHERING IS SHADED MOST OF THE TIME BY THE BUILDING BLOCKS.

IVE USED PLANTERS WHEREVER POSSIBLE, OF 600MM HEIGHT, SO THAT NOT ONLY THE FACADES LOOK LIVELY, BUT ALSO SO THAT THE USERS FEEL REFRESHED AND THE ENVIRONMENT IS ALWAYS COMFORTABLE FOR EVRYONE.

THANK YOU FOR GOING THROUGH MY PROJECT. IT WAS A GREAT PRIVILEDGE TO BE ABLE TO SHARE MY WORK.
