This project was developed by Mingda Zhang as a student from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was submited to the WAS awards 2017 under the Facilities category.

The site is located at the southwest of the University of Illinois campus, the Arboretum Park, with 27 different natural or artificial landscapes surrounded. The concept is to hide the building as much as possible since any huge and outstanding building would destroy the park which is beautiful enough. Dynamic spaces and varies sections were created not only to adapt site topography but also could stimulate users’ communications within the building. Three approaches have been used in this design to adapt to the natural landscape: placing the building on a slope; sinking the lower floor to decrease the building height; adding the green roof to adapt surrounding textures and lower the energy consumption.
