ORTHO-

This project was developed by Mingda Zhang as a student from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was submited to the WAS awards 2017 under the Housing category.

“Ortho-“is a prefix means straight, rectangular, upright. The definition of this prefix is combined with architecture in this design. Ortho-Space, Ortho-Composition, and Ortho-Structure are used in this design. The idea comes from the forest in the Allerton Park. The truck of the trees are the vertical, while branches are all horizontal. Therefore, the whole forest is made of these two kinds of elements which are perpendicular to each other. A building should also be made of these two kinds of elements to adapt the environment.

For the specific design, both public and private spaces should be considered. Since this is the house for two artists, double axes were made, one is perpendicular to the bank of the river, the other is a tangent of the existing pathway, the angle between has 30 degrees. Public Space including relax and recreation area, cooking, dining, storing, and laundry room is placed between the two rays; private rooms including the studios, bedrooms and bathrooms, are placed along the rays.
