Promenade House

This project was developed by Federica Caruso as a student from Università degli Studi di Catania, SDS Architettura Siracusa and was submited to the WAS awards 2017 under the Housing category.

The project idea is made up around the image of a hut described by Laugier, a shape that, in our minds, leads us to recognize it as a Home. The desire to not contaminate this pure shape has pushed me to consider it as something indipendent and autonomous. Its function is to provide shelter to man. Inside it, the function of living becomes tangible, turning the project as the Architecture into the Architecture. This long and narrow volume invites us, from the large square of Castello Maniace of Ortigia, to reach the seaside, in fact the natural element represents the goal to achieve. The structural solution is made of many static indipentent rings, with a wooden frame structural system. These rings can play with a continuity solution, next to each other, or they can detach themselves, move away, chase each other to show the wonderful external landscape. The most compact zone contains the housing functions, all enclosed in a wooden cube, located in the center of the area. According to the needs, it can be opened, closed, moved, overturned, to discover new articulations of the space. The project acquires its real identity in the filter area. The glimpses created give the possibility to the light to enter, but on the other hand, they show a fantastic landscape which extends to the south of the building. The external mosaic refers to the shapes of loopholes that open from the highest part of the Castel walls. In the Guest-house, the loopholes are multiplied to follow the harmonious expansion of the architecture. Firstly the look investigates with suspicion without showing, the last ring is opened to take part of the landscape as a whole.
