Sunscreen_House

This project was developed by Paolo Florio as a student from Università degli Studi di Catania, SDS Architettura Siracusa and was submited to the WAS awards 2017 under the Housing category.

The main idea of Sunscreen House is to create a space to be used as a little house of about 50mq equally distributed between indoor and outdoor. The project concept springs from the schematisation of two cubic volumes that shifting penetrate. The volume that will have the function of shelter, reception and restroom is a full block, covered in ceramic panels. The second volume has been emptied and it has become a wood pergola where to do open air activities and enjoy antropic and natural beauties such as Maniace Castel, in Ortigia, and the clear water of Mediterranean sea. After bioclimatic studies about sun intensity a structure of a inclined sail has been added to the project. This takes on the function of sun screen for the house and safeguard the climatic wellness of the residents. The sail structure is equipped with carriages that allow to slide and to screen, depending to the use, the inside or the outside. To reach the goal of zero enrgetic contribution, orizontal micro eolic implants have been added and they produce electric energy usefull for the house. Using a flat roof in the project has allowed to create a terrace with seats, where the observer can raise his point of view to the beauties of the site. The terrace is also screened by the sail structure. The architectural technology used is wood. For the structural part has been used a wood framework, covered with natural insulation panels made of hemp and cork. The stratigraphy of the wall is closed on the inside with plasterboard panels and on the outside with OSB panels. The housing module has been provided with ventilated curtain wall sistem using an outdoor covering made of ceramic panels. Technological studies, related with “Genius Loci” have permitted the growth of the project.
