The Astral Reflection

This project was developed by Iván Poyatos as a student from Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Sevilla and was submited to the WAS awards 2017 under the Facilities category.

Sky, stars, darkness. Water, stars, darkness. A water mirror, a mirror for the sky, stars up and down. The reflection of the light emitted by stars that are light-years away from us, lights of the past that look at us and which we look at.

The water’s great capacity of reflection will be the most important point of the project, which will allow the creation of a water mirror, inspired by the nature of the Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni and the mirrors of Machu Picchu.

The project is placed in the territory of Granadilla (Extremadura, Spain), a village in a place with no light pollution, abandoned many years ago because the risk of flood. That risk caused feelings of hostility towards the swamp, making his abandoned state last.

The astronomic mirror will be the vertebral axis of the project around which all the proposed spaces will developed, allowing a permanent relation and view of the mirror.

The floating complex will consists of a main circular building with the common areas for educational games and activities and spaces of meeting and relax.

On the other hand there are refuges for the stay of the users, strewn around the swamp and accesible only by boat, offering a high degree of privacy and tranquility.

The project seeks to break that feeling of hostility and bring over and attract the people to this abandoned place and give it a new opportunity.
