Void architecture
A performing art center

“For a Society innately bonded with each other,
And deeply rooted in its diverse culture,
A stage is articulated to harness that intangible bond,
With spaces in motion, the art evolves with the ever dynamic time,
For architecture as the catalyst, facilitating the
Perpetual performances of people and pace,

Culture and performing art: “harnessing the intangible”
Culture represent values and beliefs of an individual person to a large group of society establishing a social bond that further fosters an identity to the group which is passed on to generations. The idea of culture is dynamic in nature, but its essence is always retrieved to maintain the identity and enhance the social bond.
The fabric of India is deeply rooted in a richly diverse culture and values that has entitled every individual with an identity. The transition of culture is bought out mainly through expressions and constantly remoulds over time. Performance through art, music, dance and drama were essential modes of expressing thoughts and has indulged as an influential medium of cultural exchanges. With the present pace of progress, potential of nation’s diverse culture needs to be represented to its fullest and enhance the strengthening of the communal bond between people, as “the nation that stays together, will progress together”
Delhi as a stage: “a cultural node”
Delhi, being the capital of India, is home to millions of people from different parts of the country and communities, thereby forming an amalgamation of different cultures and traditions. Hence, the project emphasizes the need to rejoice the spirit of people by providing a platform for expression and showcasing the diversified culture blending with time by means of a performing art center located in the heart of the city, which is the Pragati maidan (progress grounds).
Voids-space in motion: “the idea”
The architecture is utilized to respond in line with Cultural expression by means of conceptualizing the use of flexible spaces to accentuate various performances. To heighten the sense of flexible spaces, voids are created as pause points which performs by the virtue of light and shadow creating a dynamic pattern that ushers the people for multi-use performances and infuses a space in motion by integrating it with the context.
The Void
The spatial zoning of voids enables it to act as spaces of transition or destination based on the user’s choice, thus providing a sense of flexibility. Voids of varying scale and types act as pause points enabling physical and visual connectivity between the exterior and interior spaces. A timeless loop of people, pace and place is achieved as they adapt and evolve with time and context. The voids as catalyst inculcate a sense of performance and participation amongst the people and place.
Performance in the performing art center is not only restricted to people and time, architecture is accentuated as a tool that integrally performs over time by means of sustainability. Green and passive design strategies are incorporated for enhancing the functionality and aesthetical qualities of the building envelope.
Voids as catalyst, people, pace, place as protagonist, architecture as backdrop creating timeless performances. Genesis acts as a tool for portraying the progress of nation by creating spaces in motion that stands through time. Timeless performance is the key for sustaining the functional purpose of the building.
